Background

Latar Belakang

Nanang is human. This is a fact the party is aware of and has nonetheless found difficult to hold onto, because the evidence of it keeps colliding with everything else they observe about him. He is the only one among them without scales, without infernal blood, without a draconic ancestor or a broken oath or the particular restlessness of someone built for something other than ordinary life. He is, on paper, the most ordinary member of this company.

In practice, he is the one they understand least. The intelligence is genuine. There is something operating behind his eyes that runs faster and stranger than anything the party has encountered, including the things that have tried to kill them. Whether Nanang himself has full access to what is operating there is a separate question, with a considerably less certain answer.

The Divine Intellect

Kecerdasan Ilahiah

There is a particular kind of intelligence that is so far ahead of its surroundings that it ceases to look like intelligence at all. Nanang possesses this kind. His grasp of the arcane is genuinely vast; he carries more knowledge of spellcraft than most scholars accumulate across entire careers, and he reaches for it with the casual ease of someone who has never had to search for a word.

Ada jenis kecerdasan tertentu yang begitu jauh melampaui lingkungannya sampai berhenti terlihat seperti kecerdasan sama sekali. Nanang punya jenis itu. Pemahamannya tentang hal-hal gaib sungguh luas.

The problem is the gap between what he knows and what arrives on the other side of the casting. He reaches for the Weave with complete confidence. The Weave, for its part, appears to respond with equal confidence. What the party receives is the result of both these confidences operating simultaneously, without coordination, and without apparent awareness that they might be pointed in different directions.

He casts. Something happens. Whether what happens is what he intended is a question the party has quietly learned not to ask too directly.

Ia ucapkan mantra. Sesuatu terjadi.

The Catalog of Incidents

Katalog Insiden

The party has been, at various points and in service of various battles, the indirect recipient of Nanang's assistance. The record speaks for itself, and so the record is presented here without editorial comment.

Catatan bicara sendiri. Jadi catatan disajikan di sini tanpa komentar editorial.

He cast a Minor Illusion during combat. The illusion appeared beside his own allies rather than his opponents. Three members of the party turned to look at it. The enemy did not.

He cast a Fog Cloud with the stated intention of limiting enemy visibility. The fog was thorough. It made no apparent distinction between enemy, companion, and the various uninvolved bystanders who had the misfortune of being nearby. Everyone was equally blinded. This may have been the point. It is unclear.

Semua sama-sama buta. Mungkin memang itu tujuannya. Tidak jelas.

He cast Grease to neutralize an approaching enemy. The Grease appeared beneath Nanang. He fell. The enemy, momentarily confused by this, slowed. Whether the outcome was intentional has not been resolved.

Ia jatuh. Musuh, sesaat kebingungan, melambat. Apakah hasilnya disengaja belum terselesaikan.

And then there was the crab.

In a moment of direct confrontation with an enemy of considerable power, Nanang reached into the Weave and produced a crab. Not a creature of legend. Not a conjured horror with fury and teeth. A crab. Placed, with every appearance of deliberate intention, directly in front of the enemy. The enemy looked at it. The party looked at it. The crab, for its part, was a crab.

No one has asked Nanang to explain it. It is possible he cannot. It is equally possible that the explanation exists somewhere in the higher regions of his intellect, fully formed and entirely coherent, and simply has not found a way down yet.

He cast a charm designed to produce laughter in the target. He cast it at Anaik. Anaik did not laugh. He cast it at Sogong. Sogong was charmed; there was no laughter. He turned to a nearby cow and cast the same spell. The cow was charmed. There was no laughter. Having achieved identical results from a dragonborn, a paladin, and a cow, Nanang arrived at frustration and summoned the crab. The crab bit Anaik. Everyone laughed. The chronicle records that the spell eventually worked.

He summoned a frog in the middle of the gnoll engagement, between Anaik, Sogong, and the gnolls. The gnolls mauled it immediately on arrival. Nanang was furious that it had not had time to demonstrate its purpose. The confusion of its appearance and death cleared an angle that Anaik used to strike. The frog contributed. Whether this was the plan has not been confirmed.

He summoned a crow. This was in response to Traxex's direct request for fog, in the middle of a fight with a Gnoll Warlord. The crow arrived and circled. It was the same crow from that morning, the one that had circled all day without performing any discernible function. The Warlord attacked it, along with a cat illusion Nanang had also produced, rather than Traxex who was standing on the high ground directly beside them. Traxex attacked the Warlord. It bled for the first time. Nanang had an explanation ready. The chronicle notes: this is the first entry in the catalog in which the outcome was, by any measurable standard, correct.

The Human Who Is Least Human

Manusia yang Paling Tidak Manusiawi

Every other member of this party carries something beyond ordinary humanity in their blood, their lineage, or their chosen path. Nanang carries only human stock, human years, human hands. And yet he is the one the party struggles most to predict.

Nanang hanya membawa keturunan manusia, tahun-tahun manusia, tangan-tangan manusia. Tapi justru ia yang paling sulit diprediksi rombongan.

The half-elf moves like shadow; you learn, in time, to anticipate shadow. The dragonborn is an armored wall that hits things; hitting things is comprehensible. The ranger creates trouble; trouble, however creative, has a shape. Even the oathbreaker's darkness follows a logic you can trace if you are willing to sit with it long enough. Nanang does not follow a logic that observation can reach. He is more alien to them, in the end, than any of the non-humans among them. He is the human they cannot read.

The Accidental Tactician

Taktikus yang Tak Disengaja

Here is the thing about Nanang that the party returns to, reluctantly: if Nanang does not know what he is going to do, neither does the enemy.

Tactics can be read; patterns can be anticipated and countered before they arrive. What cannot be anticipated is a sorcerer who aimed for a specific target and caught everyone in the room, or who reached for frost and produced fog, or who, at the defining moment of a critical encounter, introduced a crustacean into the equation.

The chaos is the weapon. Whether Nanang is wielding it intentionally or simply expressing it with great consistency is a question without a clean answer. Nanang himself is entirely unprepared for whatever Nanang is going to do next. This is, somehow, the most dangerous thing about him.

The Question This Chapter Must Answer

Pertanyaan yang Harus Dijawab Bab Ini

He is the party's variable, its renegade, its unaccountable constant. The question his chapter must answer is whether that reach will, in the moment that matters most, finally connect with something that resembles intention. Whether it will be genius, or disaster, or some third thing that turns out to be both. The enemy will certainly be watching. The party will definitely be standing slightly to the side.

Notable Moments

Momen Penting

The Negotiation. Session II. Preparing to talk the windmill goblins into neutrality, Nanang cast several spells to enhance his charisma and opened a conversation. The goblins attacked. The reason was not obscure: Sogong and Anaik had been moving through the rear in full plate. Nanang's response to the wasted spell slots was not measured. Sogong offered context.

Sorry for Being Arrogant. Session II. Watching Anaik charge uphill during the gnoll fight, Nanang said: "Finally I'm not being targeted and I won't be." Both gnoll hunters on the hill immediately shot at him, despite having Anaik and Sogong standing directly between them. Six arrows; he avoided five. He yelled "Sorry for being arrogant" while in the process of avoiding them. The chronicle records this as possibly the fastest acknowledgment of consequence this group has produced.

"Think Kids, Think." Session II. Having produced a crow in response to Traxex's request for fog, and then a cat illusion, Nanang stood by as the Warlord attacked both rather than Traxex, who was available on the high ground directly beside them. Then: "Think kids, think. Had I casted the fog, you wouldn't be able to attack." Traxex had no rebuttal. The chronicle records this as the moment Nanang was most completely correct, and the most difficult moment in the chronicle's history to record without editorial comment.

The Eye. Session IV. That morning, while Anaik sat on a bench in a sleep that was not sleep, Nanang procured a prosthetic eye from Volo: a glass eye that could see invisible things. He installed it in his skull on the off chance that something invisible might need finding later. The off chance arrived the same afternoon, when Auntie Ethel turned invisible in her lodge. Nanang could see her. The chronicle adds this to the catalog and notes that, unlike most entries, this acquisition functioned exactly as advertised on the first attempt.

The Sheep. Session IV. In a sunlit swamp, surrounded by grazing sheep that had given no provocation and offered no indication of being anything other than sheep, Nanang hit one of them with his staff. As hard as he could. Every sheep in the field turned into a redcap. The party was caught off guard. Nanang died. The chronicle adds this to the catalog of incidents and notes that this is the first entry in which Nanang did not reach for the Weave at all. He reached for a staff and swung it at livestock. The outcome was, by the established pattern, entirely consistent.

The Cage. Session IV. In Ethel's lair, with Mayrina burning in a cage of roots above a chasm, Nanang cast ray of frost on the cage and stopped the fire. The chronicle records this as a spell aimed at a specific target, achieving the specific intended result, without collateral damage or unexpected fauna. Two entries in the catalog are now correct. The ratio improves.

The Real One. Session IV. When Ethel multiplied into copies, Nanang found the real one in a single spell. The party converged. The chronicle notes: when Nanang connects, the fight changes shape immediately.

The Less Lethal Spear. Session IV. When the party agreed to subdue Ethel rather than kill her, everyone produced their less lethal option. Nanang pulled out a spear. A spear is, by most definitions, a lethal weapon. Somehow it worked out. The chronicle suspects this says more about Nanang's relationship with weapons than it does about the spear.

Negosiasi. Sesi II.
