Sogong Wahyudi is a tiefling. He is also, or was until recently, a fisherman. These two facts do not often appear in the same accounting, and yet here we are.

He comes from Stygia, the fifth layer of the Nine Hells of Baator, where he spent his days fishing the River Styx. This is not a figure of speech. He cast his line into the river that unmakes memory, pulled things out of it, and what he pulled was, without exception, fish. The same fish, every time. He noted this. He continued fishing. Eventually he arrived at a conclusion consistent with everything the party has since learned about him: he climbed.

One layer at a time, upward through the architecture of the Hells. Not for power or contract or any of the usual reasons. He was bored with his fish and hoped the next layer might have different ones. They did not. Every layer of the Nine Hells offered the same catch dressed in new scenery. He kept climbing. The fish question was not resolved.

He reached Avernus, the first layer and the worst stop on the itinerary. Sogong was not there for the Blood War. The Blood War did not care. He was conscripted into the devil faction's infantry at a rank low enough that the hierarchy does not bother giving it a name. He served. The fish were not mentioned again.

In one of the major engagements on the Avernus plains, a nautiloid appeared in the sky. Sogong looked at it. He looked at the war he was standing in. He jumped.

He woke up in chains, surrounded by people he had never met, with a tadpole in his head and no fish. This is, by any reasonable measure, the most interesting thing that had happened to him in years.

There is something clarifying about a man who announces his nature rather than waiting for you to discover it. Sogong said it plainly, without theater, in what was perhaps the second conversation any member of this party had with him: he is, by his own accounting, an evil person. He did not elaborate. He did not invite follow-up questions. He offered the information the way someone might mention the weather: relevant, apparently true, and not open to debate.

He is also, without question, the largest member of this company. The party has concluded that these two facts are probably related, though no one has asked directly how.

When a companion is in danger, Sogong does not calculate. The shield comes up. The Sanctuary goes out. It is not a policy; it is a reflex, and it is a paladin's reflex specifically: the one that persists after everything else about an oath has been discarded, broken, or simply grown too heavy to carry. He moves to cover his companions with the automatic certainty of someone who was built for exactly this and has not stopped being built for it, regardless of what he tells people about himself.

The party has noticed. No one has said anything directly. Beneath the bulk, the glower, and the self-assessment, something in Sogong Wahyudi is still standing guard. Whether he knows it, and whether he would admit it if he did, are two questions with answers he has not volunteered.

Anaik recruited him. This is worth examining, because Anaik's recruitment method consisted primarily of noticing that Sogong is very large and appears structurally resistant to a significant amount of incoming damage, and concluding that this was reason enough to bring him along. It was a purely pragmatic assessment, conducted with no particular interest in personality, alignment, or stated self-identification as an evil person. Anaik has never expressed regret about this. Sogong has never expressed anything about it at all.

His goals are his own. Sogong Wahyudi does not discuss his past with any apparent willingness. He does not explain his choices, his silences, or his continued presence in a company he joined under entirely unclear terms.

He climbed out of the Nine Hells one layer at a time looking for different fish and ended up here, which suggests that whatever is driving him has never been the obvious thing. He calls himself evil. He raises his shield for the people beside him. Both things are true at the same time, and the space between them is where his story actually lives. The question is not whether he will protect this party; he will. The question is why. And whether, when the answer finally surfaces, it will be something the party was prepared to carry.

To Be Fair. Session II. After the windmill goblins shifted from neutral to hostile mid-negotiation, with Nanang furious about his wasted spell slots and the party uncertain why the exchange had collapsed, Sogong offered the following: "to be fair we were creeping up behind them." He said this in the tone of someone settling a question that had already been settled. No further clarification was offered or requested.
The Illusory Wall. Session II. While the rest of the party attended to their competing priorities after the village entrance fight, Sogong explored the village and found a wall that was not a wall. He stood in front of it and said, with apparent feeling: "bro thought bro's Miyazaki." He said this more than once. The chronicle's best interpretation: Miyazaki is a figure of note from the hells below, associated with concealed architecture, and finding his work here produced in Sogong either deep respect or personal offense. Possibly both. What was behind the wall was not investigated, the other priorities being what they were.
The Tadpole. Session II. When Nanang's Hold Person brought the Warlord to a stop, Sogong felt something activate that had nothing to do with his training or his broken oath or anything he had chosen to carry. The tadpole responded to the Warlord's presence. The Warlord's left eye lit orange, its iris resolving into markings with no natural origin. Sogong's mind was not quiet; he held it anyway, and met what the tadpole was offering on his own terms. When he had it, he used it: the Warlord's will bent. It obeyed. The fight that should have been long and dreadful ended there. The chronicle notes: this is the first time the tadpole has done something that mattered. It will likely not be the last.
Died Twice. Session II. In the same afternoon, on the same hill. The chronicle records this without elaboration. The record is sufficient.
The Ox, the Vandalism, and What Did Not Follow. Session III. While the morning argument ran its course, Sogong went to town. At some point he calmed an ox near the blighted village. At a separate point he committed what the reporting party described as accidental vandalism somewhere in town. No trouble followed. Sogong has the particular quality of someone through whom consequence does not always travel in the expected direction. Whether the vandalism was truly accidental is a question Sogong did not raise and the record cannot settle. Both things are simply noted: the ox was calmed; something was broken; nobody made it a problem.
The Weight of Conviction. Session IV. In Ethel's lair, when the hag split into four copies and the party scattered to find the real one, Sogong charged forward. He carried the weight of a man in full plate and a conviction that has not yet learned to be fast. He did not reach the fight immediately. When he arrived, he smited. The chronicle notes: Sogong is never the first to strike. He is frequently the strike that the enemy was not prepared to absorb after surviving everything else. This is consistent with the shield. He arrives when he arrives, and when he does, the matter concludes.
